Red Sails – Lettuce
Days to Full Maturity: 40-50 Days
Non-GMO – Heirloom – High Germination Rate
Minimum Seed Count: 250
Red Sail Lettuce has a mild, bitter-free flavor, it contains 6 times the amount of vitamin A and 3 times the amount of vitamin C as typical supermarket lettuce. It has the ability to grow year-round, so you can harvest early for baby leaf lettuce or wait until full maturity. Its leaves are mildly sweet, large, crumpled, and crinkly, ruffled with a bronze-red color and deeply lobed leaves spanning up to 10″ across. It’s slow to bolt, which means it won’t prematurely create flowering stems that divert nutrients away from the lettuce.
How to Grow:
Start by sowing the non-GMO seeds 1/8 inch in soil, twelve inches apart, in rows twelve inches apart. Make sure to allow enough space between seeds for the lettuce to grow, as overcrowding can cause the lettuce to have a bitter taste. Plant in rich, moist, well-drained soil, and be sure not to cover it–this seed needs light to germinate. Firm the soil lightly. While growing, keep the soil well-watered. Harvest between 40-50 days after planting, and before flowers appear, to ensure the lettuce doesn’t become too mature.
